Service Description
6-week course: Thursdays, January 9 - February 13, 6:30pm - 8:00pm Ages 18+ This course explores the fundamentals of poetry and songwriting, highlighting the intrinsic connection between the two art forms. Students will learn essential techniques, including the art of "showing" rather than "telling," to create vividly emotional works. Through a combination of discussion, literary examples, and creative exercises, participants will develop their unique voice and style. This course leverages collaboration and students learn from their colleagues. Students will have the opportunity to share their poetry and ideas, along with learning frameworks to critique lyrics from a constructive perspective. This course is thought provoking and challenges older paradigms, but will call upon the past to inform the future. In the end students will learn the skills to finish songs through the use of technology and modern songwriting structures. Students will be able to imagine their own visions of song and bring these sparks to life. Poetic devices will support students in taking actions toward their dreams and they will more confidently share their artistic works with their communities. Boise-based artist Jonah Shallies is the instructor for this course. He is an educator with an MFA in creative writing and a background in multimedia and audio engineering. As a co-founder of Sound Purpose, he blends his expertise in music production and songwriting to mentor emerging artists and help them find their unique voices.
