Service Description
Recurring class, biweekly Saturdays, 1:30pm - 3:30pm Sign up for each class separately - Online registration encouraged. Participants who finish early are welcome to leave early! Check out "Visual Journaling" for an adult alternative! Taught by licensed Psychologist, Dr. Laura Burlingame-Lee, this class can help your child process emotional content, identify and cope with stressors, and enhance self-worth through art. The activities explored in this class range from "feeling monsters" and "me puzzles" (for younger groups), to affirmation banners, expressive photography, collage, and mask-making for older or more advanced groups, although these activities can be adapted for any age. Topics that may be explored include identifying and working with emotions, building self-worth, understanding what we hide and what we show to others, healthy/unhealthy relationships, mindfulness, and distress tolerance. Check out the photos below for some examples! For some classes, we may reach out ahead of time to request that you bring common supplies for a particular project. Some examples include: - Small, shoebox-sized boxes - Old board games and pieces - Pictures/magazines for collage Optional items to bring: - Clothes for art-making - Layered clothing - Bottled water/beverage Disclaimer: Because we aren't in a clinical setting, please be aware that these sessions aren't confidential and participants shouldn't reveal anything they don't want to be publicly known. If there are any signs of self-harm or harm to others, the facilitator is required by law to call the police to seek help. Likewise, if there are claims from children that suggest neglect or abuse, the facilitator may call the parents or social services to seek help. This is not clinical therapy; these groups are provided to help people cope with their symptoms. We cannot treat anyone's illnesses in this setting. Scholarships for this and all of our other classes are available for those who otherwise would not be able to attend art classes, thanks to generous donations to our Art Start Fund. If you would like to make classes available to others, see our sponsorships page to contribute a monthly or one-time donation. Thank you for supporting (y)our commUNITY! *This class is included in our Teacher Share program, which allows our teachers to expand their knowledge and skills by learning from one another at no cost. Contact us if you're a Cat teacher and would like to sign up for this class.
